Trump Administration Seeks to Introduce Immigration Bill

Many people in California are deeply concerned about changes to immigration law proposed by the Trump administration. According to reports, the administration has drafted a 620-page immigration reform bill and secured 10 Republican senators to introduce the legislation.

Reports indicate that the proposed bill reflects statements earlier in the year by Trump and son-in-law/adviser Jared Kushner about what they called a “merit-based” immigration system. Details of the proposals have not yet been released; although, Kushner reportedly said that people should read the details of the bill to understand it properly.

The proposed immigration bill comes shortly after a political controversy erupted after Trump tweeted that four Congresswomen of color should “go back” to the places “from which they came,” despite the fact that all four are American citizens. At a rally in support of Trump, supporters chanted “send her back” about Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar. This has raised further concern about the content of the proposed immigration bill. Trump’s initial statements about immigration reform garnered significant media attention, but when no bill was initially introduced, attention fell away from the plan.

While the bill was drafted together with approximately 25 Republican senators, the proposed legislation may not be introduced. A meeting with House and Senate Republican leaders was postponed. Democrats have indicated that they are unlikely to agree to an immigration bill without significant changes, especially in protecting the rights of the Dreamers, undocumented people brought to the U.S. as children.
